The Right Time to Plant

Fall is here! To a gardener, this is either the best season or the second best! With the colder weather approaching, it’s a good idea to focus on fall annuals, mums, bulbs, grass seed, trees & shrubs.

Annuals

Fall annuals are relatively low maintenance. Most require some direct sunlight. Mums especially need several hours of sun to keep blooming. While mums are perennial in our zone, they are considered to be more of an annual when used in containers. (Mums, Celosia, Pansies)

Why it’s important for the season:

Many summer annuals tend to lose their luster once the night begins to cool off in September. Fall annuals, however, like mums and pansies, bloom best when the nights cool off and they can continue to thrive even up through Thanksgiving.

Perennials

Most any perennial can be planted or transplanted this time of year. There are some perennials that bloom late in the season such as sedum, caryopteris, and asters. With cooler temperatures, perennials are less likely to suffer from transplant shock and will benefit from fall rain showers

Trees & Shrubs

Now is the best time to plant trees & shrubs. Planting them before the ground freezes will give them the best opportunity to develop their root system before winter, and when Spring is here they will be more established. Selecting a tree in the fall will also give you the chance to see its fall colors.

Remember to use MYKE

Bulbs

Beautiful spring blossoms require planning ahead in the fall. Planting bulbs in the fall allow them to have their necessary cooling period over the winter months. Once the temperatures start to thaw out in the spring, the flowers will emerge.
