The temperatures have changed, the sun is finally out, and your garden is ready to be planted. With the arrival of Spring, new unique opportunities have also come this year. Your kiddos are at home and they want to help by getting their hands in the dirt as well. Here’s a list of the top 5 ways to get the little ones involved in gardening.

  1. Have the right tools on hand, for their little hands

Big heavy gardening tools can deter kids from getting involved because it can be harder for them to use. Colonial Gardens carries kid-sized-colorful tools like, tillers, trowels, shovels, and garden gloves.

  2. Help their minds grow; show them where food comes from

It’s simple to think that food comes from the grocery store when you’re young. This is a great opportunity to show them how the Earth supplies us with nutrients grown from the soil. Four packs of lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, and more can be picked up here at our store! We even have seeds if you want to show them how big things get a small start.

  3. Teach them the importance of pollinators

Nothing could grow without the help from our smaller friends in the garden- The Pollinators. Grow a flower garden full of plants that will attract these little helpers to your backyard. Bring your little helpers with you and make a lesson plan out of it! Packs of Snapdragons, Daisies, Lavender, Marigold, and Lantana are perfect for your Pollinator Garden.

  4. Plant a family tree

You can plant lifelong memories in the ground by planting a family free. A tree will grow through the years just like your children and the love you all share together. Our nursery has a variety of trees that can be grown in the back or front yard. Some of our favorites are Willow Trees, Dawn Redwoods, or Pink Dogwoods.

  5. For those with imagination but not a backyard

Fairy Gardening is just as fun and hands on for kids without a backyard. Create small structures made out of magical findings, hidden between miniature plants. These tiny gardens spark imagination and appreciation for the natural world. Small stones, soil, moss, and a variety of fairy garden characters can be found in the fairy land section of our store.
